Ninth Letter Magazine
Ninth Letter is an award-winning, nationally distributed arts and literary journal collaboratively published by the Department of English and the School of Art + Design at UIUC.
I designed the layout for "fiftyfour monk" by Said Shirazi, about the famed jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Referencing Saul Bass' work (i.e. The Man with the Golden Arm about a jazz musician's struggle to overcome heroin), I used paper cutouts as a medium to illustrate the story.
Every student is also responsible for designing a cover. Since it was the ninth anniversary of the magazine, I worked with clay as a reference to pottery being the ninth wedding anniversary gift.
